At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
