RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
