Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
