The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
